WALKING AWAY??? Think again! Who really is to gain from the Pharmacist’s counselling?

Tales abound to the injuries attributed to DRUG MISUSE AND ABUSE. We have lives, fertility and huge finance lost to septic abortion, for young and mature ladies who tried an abortion adventure with Misoprostol and D & C. There are countless tales of accidents, organ (liver & kidney) failures as well as detention at correction facilities (prison) attributable to abuse of controlled (hard) drugs. There are also many cases of depression, schizophrenia and other mental derangements that can be linked directly or indirectly to the misuse of great and useful drugs. All these happened because the victims refused to heed good counsel at one point or the other. As the holy books similarly instructs, oh that today, this word of counsel comes to you, harden not your heart!  Every Pharmacist who makes effort to satisfy both his moral and ethical conscience by providing medication counsel to patients buying drugs from him be it at the hospital or community pharmacy will confess great di...

HOW AND WHY PSYCHOTHERAPY IS A RESPONSIBILITY FOR EVERYONE!

Image
Health is defined as a state of physical, mental and Social Wellbeing and not the mere absence of disease. Thus a mentally or psychologically challenged or unstable guy isn't healthy. This is true because a fellow who is worried about finances to take care of an ailing mother, a due to deliver wife, school fees for children and house rent and all of a sudden receives news of having been named as one of the staff who has been laid off in a downsizing scheme, is a hazard to both himself and his immediate environment and neighbours. Psychotherapy is a very useful aspect of Medical care and it works. This is a non-drug approach. Psychotherapy is a type of therapy used to treat emotional problems and mental health conditions. It involves talking to a trained therapist, either one-to-one, in a group or with your wife, husband or partner. It allows you to look deeper into your problems and worries, and deal with troublesome habits and a wide range of mental disorders, such as depression a...

Pharm. (Dr.) Nwako, CNN - Chief Pharmacist According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Drug misuse can be defined as the use of a (medicinal) substance for a purpose not consistent with legal or medical guidelines. In other words, drug misuse is the wrong use of a drug for a purpose and in a way different from how it ought to be used at that time. Here, the user in majority of the cases doesn’t obtain a prescription from a physician. For example, the use of a pain reliever (analgesic) like Ibuprofen in pain associated with stomach ulcer. The ibuprofen may worsen the ulcer pain. Alternatively, drug misuse can be looked at as the use of the right drug in the right disease condition without the proper drug information. Here, the user uses the right drug for the right disease but may apply it at the wrong time, through the wrong route, etc. In this case, the right prescription from the physician is made, but the patient fails to consult the pharmacist for the proper counselling an...

NOT JUST ABOUT TAKING YOUR MEDICATIONS BUT TAKING THEM VERY WELL - By Chikaodili Ochuba  Ms. Chikaodili Ochuba  At one point or the other in life, it becomes expedient for some persons to be given certain medications either for the elimination of a disease, its mitigation or prevention as the case maybe. Since medicines are not foods that can be dished and consumed when the appetite comes calling, it therefore is expected that they be taken in the right quantity or dose, by the right person, at the right time for the right condition. Tablets are not chocolate bars that one can offer a friend, neither does the severity of the symptoms warrant the patient by discretion to get more generous with his medication consumption in a bid to ''attack'' the symptoms with full force. Drugs can become harmful if misused, really, the greater the dose, the higher the chances of an increased intensity of adverse effects. Dumping your medication because you feel a lot better without comp...
